Why do you license your materials?
We license our materials, because we are not primarily a textbook publisher. We are providing you a SERVICE and INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. Please think of this service as if you were hiring a tutor or paying tuition at a private school, which provides the materials. At a private school, you would be paying more than $1000-$2000 a year for the English courses that we provide for your students. We have endeavored to make our materials to be student-driven as much as possible and to keep our prices low primarily to make our courses affordable for most families. However, when our materials are sold in the “used book market,” we are deprived of legitimate sales and royalties. Obviously, without sales and cash flow, Smarr Publishers would soon be out of business.
If our lack of business and cash flow are due to our not being competitive, then we should quit and put our capital and other resources into another venture. However, large publishing concerns are able to keep a constant cash flow, because they have the wherewithal to revise their editions almost every year, making the previous editions obsolete. On the other hand, small Christian publishers and suppliers of educational materials who serve primarily the home school market are dependent upon a limited number of educators, since our materials are not suitable for public schools due to our materials having a worldview that is Biblical.
If you wish to sell the materials to another family, we will permit this transfer so long as we have the name and address of the family and upon payment of a $25.00 transfer fee. This information is necessary, because the possessor of the course has certain rights under the license agreement, such as updates to the courses. The guarantee also is transferred to the buyer. If we do not have a record of the buyer, then the performance guarantee cannot be honored.
