Scope and Sequence for
Smarr Publishers' Realism and Modern Period (1850-1955)
Literature Course
Goal: To have the student develop a love for reading fine literature and to write with conviction while using a clear and pleasing writing style.
Recommended Grade Levels: This course is recommended for 9th through 12th graders who are
studying a course in history during the late 19th century through the 20th century.
Objectives:
1. The student will be acquainted with the major authors and the important works of literature during the 19th and 20th century.
2. The student will read examples from the different philosophical schools of Realism, Agrarianism, and Modernism.
3. The student will compare the ideas of the 19th and 20th century with the Bible.
4. The student will learn 20 vocabulary words a week.
5. The student will learn the form for critical writing using acceptable grammar.
6. The student will develop a pleasing writing style.
7. The student will write and re-write eight (8) argumentative papers.
8. The student will evaluate the literature by applying a Biblical worldview and will interpret
the literature solely on the integrity of the text alone.
