Scope and Sequence of the Course

Required Book List for the Course

Survey of American Literature is recommended for students who will be studying a one-year course in United States history. This is a 36-week course, which requires the reading of the following texts (for a description of the work, click on the title): Mourt's Relation, The Scarlet Letter, The Captivity of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Selected Works of Poe, Selected Stories of Hawthorne, Selected Poems of Longfellow, Billy Budd, Walden, A South-side View of Slavery, The Red Badge of Courage, The Sack and Destruction of Columbia, South Carolina, Up from Slavery, Selected Stories of Twain, Selected Stories of Wharton, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, Selected Poems of Frost, and I'll Take My Stand: The South and the Agrarian Tradition.
