A Student's Companion to
The Sack and Destruction of Columbia, South Carolina
(William Gilmore Simms)

Study guide compatible with any edition of the text

Five (5) Lessons

The Sack and Destruction of Columbia, South Carolina is the eyewitness account of General Sherman's brutality toward this city during the War for Southern Independence. Shortly after the war, reports began to circulate justifying Sherman's actions, which basically suggested that the general did not have control over his soldiers. Simms offers evidence to the contrary, showing not only was the Union army highly disciplined, but it was acting according to Sherman's orders as well. The reading of this book, which was written by one of the South's greatest writers, calls into question the supposedly righteous cause of the Northern aggressor. The conduct of the Union army in South Carolina was unjustified and criminal.
