Five (5) Lessons
During the War for Southern Independence, Walt Whitman was a self-styled "missionary"
to the Army hospitals in Washington, D.C. Whitman would visit the wounded, tried to comfort
them the best he could, and helped to write letters. Whitman's poetry has an optimistic
tone early in the war, but his poetry becomes more melancholy as the conflict continues. His
poetry about Abraham Lincoln's death is quite moving. Included in Dover's anthology are journal
entries as well as significant letters written during the war. Some of the poetry selections
include "Beat! Beat! Drums!" "Cavalry Crossing a Ford," "An Army Corps
on the March," "Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field One Night," "The
Artilleryman's Vision," "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," and
"O Captain! My Captain!"
Package includes study guide, answer keys, and vocabulary quizzes.
