Emerson's essays are not easy reading. Emerson attempts to form a philosophical system that
calls most authority into question. This philosophy is Transcendentalism of which Emerson is
the founder. Emerson teaches that intuition, or imagination, is superior knowledge when
compared to the knowledge received through the five senses. Transcendentalism is a mixture of
ideas covering the spiritual, the intellectual, and the aesthetic. Man is believed to be a
self-sufficient being who should let his conscience be his guide in life. Also, the reader will
find in these essays that Emerson has a healthy distrust for science and technology. The
selected essays include "History," "Self-Reliance," "Friendship," "The Over-soul,"
"The Poet," "Experience," and "The Divinity School Address." While the reader may appreciate
how Emerson balances common sense with a romantically hopeful view of the world and of mankind,
Emerson's conclusions are built upon a faulty foundation.
