Eighteen (18) Lessons
Written by Daniel Defoe, England's most famous dissenter of the times, Robinson Crusoe
is the first novel ever written and is a Christian classic. The novel is much more than a mere
story about survival. Defoe includes many of his religious beliefs throughout the story. The
novel is based upon the true experience of Alexander Selkirk. However, there is not much
similarity between Selkirk and Crusoe. Crusoe represents the man who runs away from good
counsel and God. Also, Crusoe portrays an individual that was rare in English society--the
self-sufficient man who relies upon himself. Only when he is brought down to nothing and left
alone all by himself, Crusoe turns to the Bible and finds salvation through the Lord Jesus
Christ. Many editions delete the spiritual references in the novel and the last
three chapters are also deleted. Arguable, the final chapters have some of the most exciting,
and perhaps one of the funniest, scenes in all literature. This work must to read if only for
the spiritual insight that Defoe provides through the character, Robinson Crusoe.
Package includes study guide, answer keys, and vocabulary quizzes.
