Introduction to Literature
This course introduces the student to critical writing, major authors, and literary genre.

Survey of World Literature
This course begins with the earliest literature, The Epic of Gilgamesh and Job and ends with three of Tolstoy's short stories. The course should be studied along with a world history course.

Survey of American Literature
This course starts with the earliest colonial writings and ends with the modern poetry of Robert Frost and Edna St. Vincent Millay and with the classic defense of the Southern way of life, I'll Take My Stand, written by twelve advocates for agrarianism, including John Crowe Ransom, Robert Penn Warren, and Donald Davidson. The course should be studied along with an American history course.

Survey of British Literature
This course is structured chronologically according to the setting of the work. This course begins with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, offers several selections by Shakespeare, includes some poetry by Alexander Pope and essays by Jonathan Swift, offers several examples of the Romantic writers, and ends with the poetry of the World War I British poets.
